Sister M. Nicholas Tosseng, OSF
Sister M. Nicholas Tosseng, OSF (1928 – 2017) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois, on January 24, 2017. A native of Chicago, Illinois, she was one of four children born to Nicholas and Helen Tosseng. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Nicholas and George, and her sister, Gertrude Pietranczyk. She is survived by her nieces and nephews. Sister Nicholas was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 69 years.
Before entering religious life, Sister Nicholas was a member of Annunciata Parish in Chicago. She attended St. Francis de Sales Grade School and High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis) Joliet, Illinois.
Sister Nicholas began her ministry in the field of education in 1950 at St. Joseph School in Joliet where she taught fourth grade. She taught the middle grades for most of her 37 years in the classroom, serving at St. Francis of Assisi, St. Francis de Sales, Assumption and St. Ludmilla in Chicago. She also ministered at St. Stephen in Streator, St. Joseph’s in Elgin and St. Rita of Cascia in Aurora.
Sister Nicholas also served in the area of Pastoral Ministry and Parish Ministry. She ministered at Cook County Jail for 22 years and at St. Tarcissus Parish for 29 years.
The wake for Sister Nicholas will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, IL, (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Monday, January 30, 2017, from 2:00 – 6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will leave from Our Lady of Angels on Tuesday morning, January 31, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. The Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, Illinois.
