Sister Rose Spatny, OSF

Sister Rose Spatny, OSF (1920 – 2017) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois, on June 12, 2017.  A native of Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Johanna (Kuta) and Joseph Malina. She was one of nine children.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers: Joseph, John and James, and her sisters Anna, Mildred, Mary, Lil and Barbara.  Sister Rose was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 80 years.

Sister Rose graduated from St. Francis Academy (now Joliet Catholic Academy).  She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Science Degree in Franciscan Theology from the College of St. Francis (now University of St. Francis) in Joliet, Illinois.  She attended St. Louis University and the University of Illinois and was a licensed Social Worker in the State of Illinois.  

Sister Rose began her ministry in the field of education teaching grades 1 and 3 at St. Joseph Parish School in Joliet.  In 1942 she began a fourteen year commitment to the children of St. Procopius Parish in Chicago where she taught kindergarten and grades 4 – 7.  She returned to Joliet where she was a cottage supervisor for teenage boys at Guardian Angel Home in Joliet.  She then enlarged her ministry into a full-time ministry of social work at Columbus (Cabrini) Hospital receiving recognition for her twenty-five years of service as a Columbus-Cabrini Health Care employee in January, 1995.

A Prayer Service for Sister Rose will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 4:45 p.m. at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, Illinois, (Wyoming and Rt. 30) and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m.  Sister Rose requested that her body be given for scientific research and there will be no formal visitation, however, all are invited to attend the Prayer Service and Funeral Mass.
