Steve J. Vertin
Steve J. Vertin, age 94, passed away peacefully Monday, August 28, 2017 at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home surrounded by his loving family. He was a proud graduate of St. Joseph Grade School (1938) and Joliet Catholic High School (1942). Steve was a founding member of Holy Family Parish, a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, a member of Holy Family Holy Name Society, KSKJ and served on numerous committees including the Building Committee for Holy Family Parish, Shorewood, IL. He had a long career with Schiek Motor Express and Joliet Warehouse & Transfer Co. before retiring in 1994.
Steve was a coach for the St. Joseph Park Little League baseball and a strong supporter of area grade school and high school bands and the Joliet American Legion Band. He was an avid golfer and a fan of University of Illinois football and basketball.
Steve is survived by his daughter, Mary Ellen (Vic) Reato of Crest Hill,IL; three sons, Stephen E. (Annette) of Campus, IL, Thomas (Diane) of Troy Township, and Joseph (Susan) of Indianapolis, IN; ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Catherine (Robert) Kuzma of Joliet, and one brother-in-law Edward P. Larkin of Troy Township. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Lucille “Lucy” M. Vertin (2011) and his parents, Steve G. and Ann (nee Stukel) Vertin.
The Vertin Family would like to thank Steve’s caregivers through the years, Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home and Joliet Area Community Hospice for their professional and heartfelt care. Your help will be forever remembered in our hearts.
Funeral services for Steve J. Vertin will be Friday, September 1, 2017 at 9:15 a.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet to Holy Family Catholic Church, 600 Brook Forest Dr., Shorewood, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Romeoville. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to Joliet Catholic Academy, Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home or Joliet Area Community Hospice would be appreciated.
