Judith "Judy" E. Vowels
Judith E. Vowels passed away peacefully at the Cuesta Manor in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Monday, September 4, 2017 at the age 76. She was born in Evansville, Indiana on March 4, 1941 and was a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Judy graduated from St. Vincent Boarding School in 1959. She married J.D. Vowels in 1960 and moved to Joliet in 1966. She was a devoted mother volunteering her time with many groups especially with the band parents at Laraway, Joliet East, Joliet Central Schools, and The Boy Scouts of America, Rainbow Council where she served as head cook for several summer camps. She was a former parishioner of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. She was a cook at Laraway Grade School until her retirement in 1999 and moved to Albuquerque. She enjoyed traveling and visiting with family and friends. Her most memorable trip was to Rome Italy where she had an audience with Pope Benedict.
Judy is survived by her sons, James (Sue) of Plainfield, IL, Tony of Silverton, CO, Donnie of St. Peters, MO, Carl (Michelle) of Dousman, WI and John (Kristine) of Rockville, MD; sisters, Marcia Slightom and Pam (Jeff) Marcum; brothers, Edgar (Connie) Humm, Jr. and David (Brenda) Humm; grandchildren, Stephanie, Kevin, Drew, Ben (fiancée Brooke), Adeline, David, Derek, Trevor, Tanner, and Lea; one great-grandson, Jackson; and one aunt, Ruth Johnson. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other extended family members also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Sr. and Helena Jo Humm; sister, Jean Nordberg and brother-in-law, Jerry Nordberg.
Funeral services for Judith E. Vowels will be Monday, September 11, 2017 at 9:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet, IL to St. Patrick Catholic Church, 710 W. Marion St., Joliet, IL where a Mass of Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. As it was Judy’s request, cremation rites will be accorded following her funeral services. Final interment will take place at Sunset Lawn Cemetery, Harrisburg, IL at a later date.
