Life gets busy and complex and at times like this, one realizes years just ran by, and later becomes never. The sweet moments, having holiday gatherings, drinks, sharing food, chatting about art, culture, and family become just memories. I am greatfull to have some and saddened that I had not enough of those times to be shared.
My love to Marie-Pierre, Emilie, Tim
Respectfully,
Miklos

Oh, the memories that came flooding back in regard to Joe! We first met Joe when we went to Jewel Frame Shop to have some prints framed that we had purchased at Chicago's Art Institute, Not only did Joe take care of that artwork beautifully, but we then learned that our sons were going to be starting school together at one of the magnet schools on Joliet's east side, Forest Park, and continuing on together at Hufford Junior HIgh in their IE school. There were parents who spent many hours volunteering at both of these IE schools, and the Baltz's were no exception. Joe's specialty for the five years our son attended Forest Park was to choose a "Young Author's" book, and he would become a playwright with those few pages. He would turn that student's book into a play that would be acted out by the parents each year. It was fun to witness the process of Joe deciding which book might work for that venture, then meeting again to see the script he had written from that student's book, and the different parts that were created. It was a tremendous undertaking that Joe seemed to accomplish with ease. There were so many laughs and good times preparing for those plays, which Joe directed, and it sure does bring back precious memories!
We were so very saddened to learn of Joe's passing. May you be at peace now, dear Joe, and may God continually bless Marie Pierre, Emilie and Tim with wonderful memories of times spent together with you.

He helped me figure out what I want out of life. If it wasn't for Mr. Baltz I would not have felt so strongly about my goals. Very few teachers show care for their students, but Mr. Baltz was genuinely kind to each of his students. I will forever remember what I learned from him. He was definitely the best photography teacher I've ever had, but he was also the best teacher. As I go on in my career and in life I will carry his lessons close to my heart. He taught me and so many others how to create art and appreciate it. He gave me the building blocks, and I won't let them go unused. I discovered who I am and what I can do thanks to Mr. Baltz. I will forever be grateful for that.

When I first got out of the Army in 1977, I did not know exactly what I wanted to do. I ended up in the medical field like I was in the Army. One day I saw an add in the Herald News about a place called Jewel Frame Shop which was for sale. I traveled to the east side to find this place because I was always interested in doing something with my hands that would support my family. My life changed that day when I met Mr. Joe Baltz for the first time. As he stepped out of the back room I saw a tall, young, smiling gentleman that said something in his dry sense of humor that made me laugh. I instantly liked him and that didn't change for the rest of our lives. We made a friendship that day that lasted every time we met-too infrequently as our lives took different paths. But the information we shared that day he remembered so that every time we met-maybe at his new Jewel Frame shop location on the west side or maybe at Louis's Family Restaurant or maybe at church-and that always amazed me. He was so genuine and real. I envied his knowledge of local history and his genuine concern about causes that he championed. He was a man of the world and knew a lot about everything that mattered and he was SO interesting. He always had a way of speaking that got his point across but never made you feel like he was forcing anything on you. You wanted to listen and understand his view on things. He was genuine. The world lost a gentle soul that left his mark on the community and everyone that had the pleasure to make his acquaintance. God Bless you, Joe. You made a young veteran new to this town feel welcomed and my life was better from the moment I met you. Take some pictures of Heaven and continue to teach us, like you loved to do, from above.

The obituary so beautifully encompasses the Joe I knew. His love for life and all that were in it was always apparent. I always loved seeing his students walking around taking pictures with either their pinhole cameras they created or a modern day camera--- I knew they were looking through the holes with a new perspective that was encouraged by Joe. He gave so many people hope with just being Joe! My prayers to his family, friends, and students. A piece of Joe will live in each of us...

I had occasional contacts with Joe at Curbside Playhouse and at cast parties. He had a way of talking to you in such a way to make you feel as though he was really interested in what you had to say. It was clear that he was. He appeared to be the most honest person I ever knew in the theater community.
In the late 90's, I saw him sitting at a cafe in a bookstore across from Louis Joliet Mall. I stopped to say hi. He insisted I sit down and talk for a while. You just couldn't say no. It was refreshing to keep such a wonderful, open person company for a while.
