Obituary of Valentine Madej

Valentine Joseph Madej, age 87, of Shorewood, and formerly of Paw Paw and Chicago, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 with his beloved wife at his side.

Born March 20, 1930 in Chicago, he was the son of Valentine and Lottie (Mateja) Madej.  He proudly served with the United States Army during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion.  He worked many years as a supervisor for GATX Corporation, Chicago.

Valentine was a very caring and kind hearted man who was generous in his support of his church and charities for children and animals.  He loved to read and had a keen interest in history and the military.  He loved to attend auctions and flea markets and enjoyed collecting pendulum clocks, watches, coins and cars.  He also liked to fish.

Surviving are his loving wife, Oleksandra (Chernysh) Madej of Shorewood; two daughters, Rosemarie (Karl) Klimach and Diane Raymond; a step-son, Kevin (Kirby) Fricano; two step-daughters, Oleksandra Mykulyak and Kathie (Bryan) McGill, daughter in law, Melody Mason Madej; and grandchildren, Julie, Daniel, Michelle, Kellie and Russell; and great-grandson, Travis.

He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Dorothy A. Madej (2007); his parents; two brothers, Chester and Edward; son, John Madej and a step-son, Vasyl Chernysh.

Funeral services for Valentine Madej will be held Friday, December 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Roads, Joliet, where visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.  Military rites will be accorded by the United States Army following services.  Interment in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery will be private.  For more information, please call (815) 741-5500 or visit his Memorial Tribute at www.fredcdames.com
