Obituary of Robert A. Wiegmann
Robert Anthony Wiegmann, age 86, of Joliet, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017 at home under hospice care.
Born November 25, 1931 in Joliet, he was a graduate of Joliet Catholic High School class of 1949. He retired from Modern Builders Industrial Concrete. He was a member of Will County Carpenters Union Local 174 for over 50 years. There are examples of his masterful carpentry handiwork throughout the city of Joliet. Bob was a lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and also a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He received several awards during his lifetime. He was the first Man of the Year in 1973 for the De LaSalle Joliet Catholic High School Association receiving the award from Gale Sayers. He was a Boy Scouts of America Webelos Leader for 27 years. He earned the Saint George Religious Medal, was a member of the Order of the Arrow, and he received the Award of Merit in 1989 from the Boy Scouts of America.
He was a devoted husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved taking care of his family. He enjoyed biking, camping, boating at Lily Cache Recreation Club, bowling, golfing, traveling, woodworking, bird watching and outwitting squirrels. He loved playing games on his IPad, card games, and listening to his portable radio. He will be remembered for his strong moral compass. His children credit him for teaching them strong values and the ethics of hard work. Learning carpentry and construction skills was a bonus.
Surviving are his children: Loreen Carpenter, Sharon (Dave) Orphey, Beth (Chip) Burczak, Cathleen (the late Bill) Doran, Robert (the late Rose) Wiegmann, Patricia (Brad) Blue, Gregory (Karen) Wiegmann, and Elaine (Mark) Doran; 21 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; a brother James (Anita) Wiegmann, sister in law Claudia Manning, and nieces and nephews, Michael (Jennifer) Wiegmann, Michelle (Greg) Burdett, Mary Therese Janovyak, Carol (Louis) Konc, Karen Roller, Helen (Gary) Burkheimer, Mark (Beth) Westman, and Scott (Heather) Westman.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan (nee Westman) Wiegmann; his parents, Joseph and Emma (nee Haas) Wiegmann; two brothers, Joseph Wiegmann and Raymond Wiegmann; half siblings, Charles Wiegmann, Gertrude “Happy” McCartney, and Margaret Wysocki; nephew, James Smith; and niece, Janet Williams.
Funeral Services for Robert A. Wiegmann will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Road., Joliet, IL to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
