Obituary of Helen Allen

(nee Juergens)

At the age of 88, Helen Allen passed away peacefully on July 4, 2018, at Rock Run Memory Care Center in conjunction with Great Lake Hospice, where she was cared for with compassionate professionalism.  It is important to recognize that God called her home on the Fourth of July and to those who knew her say she could be described as a little firecracker.  Helen was born on a farm in Tinley Park, IL, in Rich Township, and was a longtime Joliet area resident.  She was, to all who knew her, the consummate homemaker.  She enjoyed gardening, baking, and making doll cakes.  Nothing was more relaxing than vacations to her beloved North Woods in Wisconsin.  She was also very involved in her churches functions and organizations first, St. Peter's Lutheran Church Women's Evening Guild and then Hope Lutheran Church.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert E. Allen; parents, Otto, Sr. and Martha (nee Jaeschke) Juergens; five brothers, Edwin (Julia) Juergens, Emil Juergens, Otto Juergens, Jr., Herman Juergens and Elmer Juergens and two sisters, Hilda (William) Feigel and Mildred (James) Gross.

Helen is survived by her two daughters, Claudia L. (Bryan) Smoljo and Denise L. (Dr. Roger) Hitt; four grandchildren, Dayna (Christopher) Johnson, Danielle (Kristofer) Pagoria, Krista (Randy) Davis, and Ryan (Kelly) Hitt; great grandchildren, Luke Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Keegan Davis, Kailey, Ryley and Kaydan Hitt; three sisters, Edna (the late Henry) Beckstein, Ruth (the late Charlie) Wade, and Lucille (the late Donald) Topolski; and sister-in-law, Olga Juergens.  Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Helen Allen will Lie In State on Monday, July 9, 2018, from 9:30 a.m. until time of Funeral Services at 10:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 305 E. Black Rd., Shorewood, with Rev. William C. Ryden officiating.  Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name to Hope Lutheran Church Memorial Fund would be appreciated.  Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet.  For more information, please call (815) 741-5500 or visit her Memory Tribute at www.fredcdames.com
