Obituary of Stephen Nelson

Stephen J. Nelson passed away on Monday, July 30, 2018, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, at the age of 76, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in Chicago, IL, on March 24, 1942, to the late Stephen and Sophie (nee Scerba) Nelson.  Stephen was a graduate of Reavis High School in Burbank, IL, and was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy.

He retired as Operations Manager with Standard Parking at O’Hare International Airport, after almost 30 dedicated years of service.  In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking and was a collector of “things in general”.  What he was most proud of was his family; he was a dedicated husband, a loving father, and a devoted grandfather.

Stephen is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Claudia (nee Gilman); his children, Karen, Stephanie (Jason), Stephen C. (Jill), Mary Kay (Terrance), and Samantha (Matthew); and his seven grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at 9:15 a.m., at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet, IL, and will proceed to Holy Family Catholic Church, 600 Brook Forest Ave., Shorewood, IL, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, where full military honors will be held under the auspices of the United States Navy and the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.  For more information, please call 815-741-5500 or visit his Memorial Tribute at www.fredcdames.com
