Dearest Lorettta,
It is only when I was looking to send you a Christmas card that I learned of your passing. It was a pleasure caring for you at Our Lady of Angels and a bigger pleasure to know you. I hope that you have found John and are happy. I hope that you went in peace.
Always,
Rose

Loretta, a flaming red head of Irish decent with an infectious smile held—as she would say—a wiggly baby. That was me. She was my Godmother and forever a part of the Bertagnoli family.
Her laughter and love for life will be missed. With a scotch in her hand, she was always ready for a party.
As the middle child in a family of six, she made me feel more than special.
Her antics were endless ... always encouraging child-like behaviors. Not long ago, during Easter season while on a quick trip to Walgreens, she dared me to turn on an end display of dancing, flapping, squawking, battery-operated chicks performing the Mexican Chicken Dance. As the chicks waddled off the shelf, she scurried two isles beyond to disassociate herself from the perpetrator—all the while laughing uncontrollably.
The event, not appreciated by a shopper, complained of an excruciating headache, bellered, “Who in the h--- did this!”

Loretta is responsible for my love of culture and art. All of eight or nine, she took me and older sister Laura to a Chicago musical and the Art Institute before ending an unforgettable experience with dinner at a fine German restaurant. Appreciation of the arts carried into my adult life.
She was so much fun. We shopped, dined out, or just hang out in her lovely garden.
Irreplaceable and atypical, she will always be dear to my heart. Rest in peace, Loretta.
Lovingly, Alice ... or as she called me, "Alice Blue Gown."

Loretta--a little girl who never grew up--always a child--missing the adoring father who passed when she was eleven. Perhaps this is why she lavishly doted on other's children presenting the most "unusual" gifts. Her closets, her drawers, and her car held endless goodies. Shouts of youthful joy resounded when she and John pulled into the drive.
All this replayed when the little girl --who never grew up-- rejoiced when OLA visitors brought her "goodies." All so evident in her infectious giggle.
She especially favored my sister's children, but no child was ever over-looked by her or John. A wonderfully matched couple, she and John visited y ailing Mom at the Lake. They never came empty-handed. Her oft fiery responses and generosity will be missed.

No one was quite like Loretta Mary McCarney Pavlik.
She knew my mother, Freda before we were born. Well, she inherited six Bertagnoli kids and we adored her.
Our Christmas visit to “Retta’s” was the best. We got to choose a candy cane from the tree, then preceded to screech with delight as we did wheel barrow races up and down her living room. She loved children!
Her laugh was infectious!
She had long red hair that she braided and wore around her head. Include her white skin and laughing green eyes, and you have the consummate “Irish Lass.”
When they say the Irish are fiery...well, that was Loretta.
She met John Pavlik at Argonne Laboratories.
He, a research scientist and she, a secretary.
They were both in their 40’s, only children, and intellectuals. A match made in heaven!
We howled with laughter every time she told the story of John proposing at Taco Bell!
They travelled together, were members of the Chicago Symphony, and Orchid Society.
They had the best Garden and greenhouse at their beautiful home in Lyons, IL.
Always the center of every party, people would stop at dinners or events and say,
who are those people having so much fun?
Every Christmas we anxiously awaited their arrival to my parents’ home in Joliet. The little green Fiat pulled up with loads of gifts and fabulous food!
Loretta will forever be in my heart, as well as many, many people. The world burns a little less bright without her in it.
I was proud to call her my “second mom.”
I will miss her and the extraordinary joy she brought to my life.
Rest In Peace my dear friend.
I love you,
Laura Bertagnoli
