Obituary of Robert W. Opelt

Robert Walter Opelt, of Westmont, passed away at the age of 88, on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at Good Samaritan Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family. Robert was born on May 6, 1930, the son of William L. and Marie (nee Meitz) Opelt.  Born and raised in Joliet, IL, Robert graduated from Joliet Township High School, Joliet Junior College and received his bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Illinois. He proudly served our country, earning the rank of Sergeant, in the National Guard and in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Robert was proud of the leadership that he provided within the Boy Scouts. Dedicating over 40 years of combined service, serving twice as a Scoutmaster, he played an important role to not only his own children, but as a positive role model to countless other troop members by providing direction, coaching, and support. He was a mentor and role model to all that knew him. He led by example and was an inspiration to all.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Harriett (nee Wheeler); his children, David A. Opelt, Deborah L. Dyschkant, Robert William (Michelle) Opelt, and Scott M.
