Dustin worked in Set Crew for the Musical all three years that I worked at MCHS. He was always willing to help, and consistently somebody that my team and I could rely upon to get jobs done correctly. The first year I was at MCHS I had seen Dustin working for the Production Manager, but had not had the chance to introduce myself. I caught him in the hallway during one rehearsal and introduced myself.
I said, "I don't know what your name is, and that feels wrong considering you're in crew."
The response I expected was something like, "Oh! No worries! My name is _______."
Instead, Dustin shook my hand for an amazingly long time while pondering his response, and then said, "That leaves me in a unique position of power."
"That's true, " I said. "You get to decide what I call you for the rest of your high school career."
He paused for a second, continuing to shake my hand. Then he said, "I'll get back to you," turned, and walked away, leaving me laughing. He later walked up to me and told me that he'd like me to call him "Gravy". I happily obliged, and we went on with our weeks before the show opened.
When the show had opened, I found myself needing his help with something. I went up to one of the other crew members and said, "Hey. Have you seen Gravy around?" They stared at me blankly, and I realized that nobody else knew him as Gravy. I tried describing him to them, but to no success. Eventually I found him myself and finally learned his real name.
The time that I was lucky enough to spend with Dustin at school was similar. I always enjoyed the times he would visit the choir room, whether dragged there by his friends, or of his own volition to challenge me to a game of chess. He was always ready with his dry sense of humor and awkwardly long handshakes. I had the highest hopes for him and couldn't wait to see the way he changed the world. I speak for not only myself, but the entire musical program when I offer our deepest condolences to his family, and say that Dustin...Gravy...will be so sorely missed.

The world has lost a light with Dustin’s passing. He will be remembered in my heart for the rest of my life. Dustin was a student and a person I aspire to be like. The kindness, integrity, compassion, curiousity, and depth he showed both as a student, and as a young man, will live on in so many classmate’s and teacher’s hearts forever. In an essay Dustin wrote his junior year he he said, “As a young child I remember wanting one thing for myself, to be remembered as someone who left the world a better place then when I first found it”.

My heart is so sad to think that this world has lost a person as kind, polite and special as Dustin. He never failed to have a sincere smile and greeting when he entered the classroom or if he saw you in the hallway. Ha always worked so hard and had a great attitude. I would have been happy to have 20 Dustins in class. I pray you find peace after this tragic loss.

My sincere condolences to the family. Losing a love one in death can seem unbearable, especially when their life is just getting started. But may the promise at John 5:28,29 give you comfort and hope.
