Sending much love and many hugs. Verna was such a special lady. As a new teacher, she took me under her wing and assured me I could be a good teacher. She loved so many kids into success, and many teachers as well. I loved having her just down the block, and remember John babysitting our doggy. So glad John and Cyndi could be close to help her. Thought we could be there today, but got tied up with the Egg Hunt. Sending good thoughts and wishes for peace.

What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful woman. Loved her smile, her gentle spirit and the love she had for all of her many many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The legacy of the Purdue Family lives on and on. All of you have her love for life , learning and travel and of course her deep love for Jesus. So fitting her memorial is on this Easter season. Her love for Christ always first. May God's healing presence be with you all.

Mrs. Purdue was more than just a teacher at MCHS. She was family. She was already teaching there when my Dad took the head librarian position. She became a surrogate grandma to both my brother, Ray, and I as we grew up. We would often work for her at her home when she needed extra help - cleaning windows, doing yardwork and my special favorite, wrapping Christmas presents for her kids and grandkids (each one received 7 presents from her). She wouldn't hesitate to pull rhubarb for me or cut roses. I'd sometimes go over when I was in junior high and high school just to make sure she didn't need anything. Every kid in her class was "Miss" or "Mister" with their first name. She always wanted to know your opinions and encourage us to think outside the box about how history was happening around us all the time.
I remember Dad coming home one afternoon and telling us how she had just left her classroom when the ceiling fan in the room fell and landed on her desk where she had been sitting. God was looking out for her that day.
Now she rests in peace, strong in love and faith. She was one of the best and will always be remembered.
With much love,
Kathie Hayton Mayer

My favorite teacher MCHS (class of 76). Mrs. Purdue was so intelligent, fun and interesting with an enormous amount of energy and passion as a teacher. I have never forgot her and I look back with fond memories and that I was very fortunate to have her as a teacher and her inspiration that she gave to so many of her students through the years. My heartfelt condolences to the Purdue family.

My deepest sympathies and condolences on the death of Verna. She was a beautiful soul and the world is a little dimmer because of her passing.
When I was a young, new teacher, Verna had the room across the hall from mine at Morris Community High School. She was a godsend in helping me maneuver the waters of MCHS and teaching. She was positive, warm, welcoming and engaging. I remember clearly that everyone was "hon" and her smile and gentle manner put me and all who came in contact with her at ease.
Know she touched so many lives, and her legacy lives on not only through her own family, but the families of the lives she touched.
Peace be with you!

As a first-year teacher, my classroom was across the hall from Verna's. I would constantly be amazed at her enthusiasm for her teaching and the kindness she always showed to students and teachers alike. When walking down the hallway, you could always hear Verna teaching. She was an inspiration to us all at MCHS. She will be missed tremendously! God bless you Verna.
