Phillip Henry Monaghan
Age 82, of Joliet, IL, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. He was born on August 18, 1936 to the late Frances (Morin) and Wilbur Monaghan in Superior, WI, where he was raised and educated.
Phil enlisted with the U.S. Air Force and then transferred to the U.S. Navy, retiring after 22 years of dedicated service. He served in Vietnam receiving several citations and medals. Throughout his naval career he could be counted on for sound advice and genuine support.
Phil is survived by his wife, Elsa; daughter, Frances (Laura Garrard) Monaghan-Garrard; son, John (Liliana) Monaghan; grandchildren, Samuel, twins Hannah and David, and Samuel Joseph; sister, Kathleen Radtke; brother, Michael Monaghan; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hannah; his parents; and ten siblings.
In addition to his service to his country, Phil also worked in security and taught English in Columbia. He enjoyed traveling, especially on his motorcycle which he rode well into his 70’s.
Visitation for Phil Monaghan will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2019, from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m., at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet. A Prayer Service will begin at 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home with Fr. Chris Groh officiating. Interment with Military Honors will take place in Hayti, MO on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 12:00 noon under the direction of the John W. German Funeral Home (573) 359-1400.
