Obituary of Ann M. O'Connor

Ann M. O’Connor, of Shorewood, IL, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, July 24, 2019.  Born Johanna Marie McEgan in Ballyheigue County, Kerry, Ireland on January 15, 1930, she immigrated to the United States at age 19 and settled in Chicago, where she met her husband and lifelong friend John O’Connor.  They were married in 1951 and initially lived in the Mt. Greenwood neighborhood.  In 1959 they became one of the first residents of Country Club Hills, IL, where they raised their family and were active members of St. Emeric Parish.  While raising her children, Ann had a career in the Meat Cutters Union, most of which was spent behind the deli counter at the Dominick’s store in Matteson.  After retirement, John and Ann moved to active adult communities in Matteson IL and Sun Lakes AZ then finally settling at The Timbers Retirement Community in Shorewood.  Ann had many lifelong friends through her interactions at work and in the community, always greeting people with, “How ya doing Luv?”  

She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Mary McEgan; her beloved husband, John; and brothers, Patrick and Rev. Michael McEgan.  

Ann is survived by her children, Michael (Ann), John (Nancy) and Mary (Brad); grandchildren, James (Daniella), Jonathan, Kevin, and Colleen; great-granddaughter, Stella; and sisters, Kathleen, Bridie (Tom), Mary, and Sr. Esther (RSM).  Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.  

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, August 5, 2019 at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.) in Joliet, where visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. until her service of remembrance at 7:30 p.m.  Interment will be held privately at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name can be made to Joliet Area Community Hospice or Catholic Charities.  For more information, please call 815-741-5500 or visit her Memorial Tribute at www.fredcdames.com
