Rosemary S. McGarry passed away at the age of 87 on Monday, August 12, 2019, at Joliet Area Community Hospice, with her family by her side. She was born in Chicago, IL on August 30, 1931, the daughter of Nora (nee Redding) and Francis P. Scanlan. Rosemary resided in Chicago until moving to Joliet, IL in 1999.
Beloved mother of Denise McGarry, Sue McGarry, Michael McGarry, Jeanne (Bob) Laird, John McGarry and Colleen Zeiger (Dan McKay); loving grandmother of Therese (Matt) DeGroot, Danny Timlin, Joe Timlin, Jacqi McGarry, Tom McGarry, Ross Laird, Rebecca Laird, Brianna Laird and Jack (Elly) Zeiger; proud great-grandmother of Nathan, Taylor, Scarlett, Sawyer and Lily; dear sister of Harold “Bud” Scanlan; fond Aunt “Roney” to many nieces and nephews; and a dear friend to many.
She was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, John F. McGarry; her siblings, Fran Monreal, Gladys Gaworski, Loretta Connolly, Dorothy Rowan, Jean Labus, Shirley Fornero and Jack Scanlan (WWII). She will also be welcomed home in Heaven by her canine companion, Murphy.
Rosemary will be remembered fondly as a very compassionate woman of faith. She always put others first and lived her life centered around Catholicism. She volunteered frequently at St. Patrick’s Church and attended many church functions. Rosemary was a fabulous cook, baker and homemaker, and was a member of the Red Hat Society.
Visitation for Rosemary McGarry will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2019, from 3:00 until 9:00 p.m., at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet, IL. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 16, 2019, at 9:15 a.m., from the funeral home chapel to St. Patrick Catholic Church, 710 W. Marion St., Joliet, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Worth, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would be appreciated.
