The very best family get togethers for me were the ones at Shirley and Joe’s home in Schenectady. I remember one in particular that turned into a clam eating contest. Great fun for a kid competing with the adults. Shirley was a great host, and Joe would often have some sort of creation to show everyone - like the sound synthesizer or the sail boat. Looking back, those were simpler times and good times that I looked forward to, especially if we were meeting at the Downing house.
