Obituary of Filomena Egizio
Filomena Egizio
(nee Maurizio)
Filomena Egizio, 93, born on June 2, 1927, passed away peacefully on December 14th, 2020. Filomena was born to Frances and Michele Maurizio in a small town outside of Bari, Italy. Filomena was a devout Catholic and was educated in Italy where she spent many years as a religion teacher.
Filomena was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister, and her husband Louis of 50 years. She married in Italy and then resided in Joliet where she raised her three children. She is survived by one sister, her children, Mickey (Cathy) Mary Lou (Dave) Catalani, Karen (late Yanto) Hughes, and eight grandchildren, Sandra, Louis, Traci, Ashlee, Cory (Amanda), Nicole, Adriana, and Vinnie.
Filomena, also known as “Nonna” by family and friends, will be remembered for her generosity and her love of cooking. Nonna treated everyone like family, anyone who knew her knew they were always welcome in her home.
Filomena was active in the community. She was a member of the American Italian Cultural Society, PTA, and neighborhood clubs. She volunteered her time at the “AICS”, schools and other programs that needed assistance. She had a passion for life that was visible in everything she did.
Nonna’s love for family was first and foremost in her life; her values and traditions were passed down to her children and grandchildren. She had an incredible journey in life with experiences that were endless from her time in Italy, Joliet, and California. We have lost a very special Mom, Nonna, and friend and she will be deeply missed.
