As I was reflecting on the memories I have of John, it won’t surprise you that many came from when I spent time babysitting for you. I remember thinking John was so sophisticated and worldly. He had so many interesting hobbies and was so knowledgeable. He made quite an impression on me. Of course, like many, my memories include food. I first tasted curry and venison when I was snowbound at your home. And, he encouraged me to try lobster during one of the lobster boils at your house. To this day lobster and Indian food are two of my favorites.
Over the years, especially after I moved from Morris, I didn’t see as much of John. But when the opportunity came, it was as if not time had passed. I heard about what Elizabeth, John Michael and Richard were up to and where their lives had led them. His pride in each of you and love for you always made him light up. I so enjoyed hearing the updates and seeing the joy life had brought him through his family.
When my son was in college, he started wearing a bowtie. The first time I saw him in one, John came to mind. I didn’t know many men who wore bowties and I’m not sure what prompted my son to wear one. However, to this day, he prefers a bowtie and I am so glad that he does because every time I see him in one a fond memory floats into my mind and brings a smile to my face.
John truly was one of the great men in my life and for all who had the pleasure and honor to know him. My heart is broken for the sorrow you are feeling, and, at the same time, it is so grateful for the memories that you have to draw upon during this time. May peace and comfort be yours in the days, weeks and months ahead. With my love and sympathy.

This was taken on one of my favorite days ever. Sausage making at the Hansons. I looked forward to this day every year. John always made us feel so welcome and a part of the family. A true master of any craft he took interest in.

Dear Ellen and family,
Our prayers are with you at this time of grief. John will be missed by all who knew him. He was fun, had a great sense of humor, and was a mentor to many. I appreciate all he shared with me, as a new comer to politics many years ago. We loved hearing him share about his blacksmithing projects, his kids and grandkids. And Ellen, we sat with John last fall as you hopped into the plane for a ride, at the fall pig roast @ Bruce & Cindy's! John's smile was so big, he really enjoyed seeing you have that fun experience! He packed a lot of life and love into his time here, a good example of a life well-lived.
God's comfort and blessings to each of you,
with love,
Deb and Joe

1 John 4:7
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
It was while I was in college in the Midwest that I began to know my uncle John. For a few years I would visit John, Ellen, and the family over Thanksgiving break. John was always friendly and welcoming to me. He and aunt Ellen were wonderful hosts. John’s hospitality, gourmet cooking, zeal for the outdoors, and his love for family has stayed with me over the decades. Just a few years ago Bethany, my youngest daughter Rebecca, and I dropped in on John and Ellen with little notice while we were visiting colleges in the area. As always, a friendly welcome and hospitality greeted us.
We love John and Ellen, Elizabeth, John Michael, and Richard. You can tell a lot about the character of a man by the family he leaves behind. I am very thankful to be family and a friend to John!
Love and Peace, David
Losing a husband, father, is never easy. You will be our thoughts and prayers as we say goodbye to John on this earth. It helps me to grieve knowing that this life is short and we will meet again in heaven. May God bless you and keep you during this time. We love you and look forward to our time again together.
Love, Bethany

I was the Chief that Mr. Hanson spent all that time and effort making such a beautiful and wonderful traditional Native American outfit for. I have always felt honored that he saw a young man wearing an outfit that was modified to fit young women and felt he would change that. I spent 3 years as Chief and some of my proudest moments were performing and he made it special by creating the outfit. Years later in a random encounter at a store, I spoke with him about the bead work. He smiled and gave a little laugh as he explained that his daughter would redo all of the work he had done because he never quite got it to look as good. So thank you to him and my condolences to his family.

Happy Trails John!
John was a friend and trusted confidant. I enjoyed working with John on a number of projects. He had a sharp mind and quick wit. John was tenacious but fair in his practice of law. John was instrumental in participating, directing, leading, and helping the Grundy County Republican Party build and enjoy the success it has experienced over the past several years. I will miss sitting in the back of Republican Central Committee meetings and laughing with John about developments of the day. John was dedicated to helping others and desired that his community would be a better place for all. He had strong beliefs about the rights of individuals and the protections afforded all of us through the Bill of Rights.
Enjoy your new destination John and look down on us from time to time and provide positive direction to us.

I remember shortly after I met john, in the mid 1990's, he had said he injured himself on what I heard as a ford. I replied, really what year and was it a hot rod. John said, no not ford....forge and held up his middle finger to me and laughed.
Among many of John's wonderful attributes was his sense of humor
I shall truly miss this fine man, he is a tremendous loss to his family friends and the community at large.
May our God bless and keep John, Ellen and their entire family.
