Obituary of Sr. M. Nadine Overbeck, OSF

Sister Nadine Overbeck, OSF (1932 – 2021) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois, on May 2, 2021.  Born in Teutopolis, Illinois, Sister Nadine is one of nine children born to the late Cecelia and Ralph Overbeck. She has one sister, Mary (Joe) Maksl, living in Indianapolis, IN and one brother, Gerald Overbeck living in Rockford, IL. Her brothers Ralph, Tom, and Jim, and her sisters Mardell, and Rita (Sister Daniel Marie) are deceased. Sr. Nadine was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate for 62 years.

Sister Nadine attended Maple Grove Grade School and Teutopolis High School in Teutopolis, Illinois.  She earned her Bachelor’s Degree and also holds a Master’s Degree in Franciscan Theology from the Seraphic Institute, College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis).

Sister Nadine ministered in the field of education for seventeen years. Her first three years were at the Cathedral of St. Raymond, St. Mary School, Plainfield, Illinois and St. Joseph School, Joliet, Illinois. From 1963 until 1977 she ministered in Ohio, mainly in the Columbus area, teaching at St. Michael School in Worthington, Ohio and at Bishop Ready High School in Columbus, Ohio.

In 1978, Sister Nadine began serving full-time in pastoral ministry as Youth Minister and Pastoral Assistant at St. Agnes Parish in Columbus, Ohio. From 1983 until 1986 she served as a rector at Breen/Phillips Hall in Notre Dame, Indiana, and after a brief assignment in Massachusetts, Sister Nadine began serving as a Pastoral Associate and Director of Religious Education at St. Thomas More in Durham, New Hampshire.  From 1994 to 2004 she ministered at St. Nicholas Church in Zanesville, Ohio, serving as Adult Religious Education and Pastoral Associate. She also did psychological testing.

In 2005, Sister Nadine became the Congregation’s Government Benefits Coordinator, serving in that capacity until 2013. She also ministered as a Local Chapter Coordinator and a member of the Vocation Team. She lived at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home where her ministry was one of Prayer and Presence.

Due to the restrictions of the COVID virus, there will be no wake for Sister Nadine. She will be interred in the Congregation’s plot at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, IL.  A Memorial Mass will be celebrated for Sister Nadine at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet at a future date.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial

  A Memorial Mass will be celebrated for Sister Nadine at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet at a future date. 

Interment

She will be interred in the Congregation’s plot at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, IL.
