I knew Thomas Brian Carney as "Thomas Carney." We met on Allpoetry.com, almost eight years ago. I can't remember if he read one of my poems first and commented, or I read one of his first. He was always so kind with his comments and suggestions and I began to learn a great deal from him. We became online friends through our poetry, but as time went on we started to discuss politics and his faith. We rarely argued about politics because we were of like minds. We did have some interesting online discussions about faith. We believed the same just went about it differently. He loved and was proud of his brothers, but his greatest loves were his daughter and his wife. He was so exceedingly proud of her. She must miss him terribly. Here is a copy of the first poem he posted on Allpoetry over 10 years ago:
A Slave to Destiny
My name is Sir Thomas
Once humble Knight in pursuit of justice Protector of pilgrims to the Holy Land Christendom and Grace through Faith I stand
A celibate monk but Warrior by trade Released from that charge, re-commissioned I bade To search for the relics affirming a man Prophecies fulfilled if you believe that He can
Now sold into slavery, betrayed by a friend An oarsman on a boat precious cargo to lend Anger can keep you alive, only just The difference is The Lord, dust to dust
"Ten Minute Break !" shouted by head pirate Sven Muscles relieved came memories again The woman I loved brought a smile to my face Sword-blade side to the head ceased that embrace
"Now Row !" came the orders break over and done I pulled on the oar it now came down to one Thoughts of my true love gave me new life Now rowed with vigor despite co-pious strife
I pulled as I sweat-ed, oared as I shivered Storms, hot sun, gusty wind I delivered What did it for me? What kept me going? It was you, my love, who did All the rowing!
Chained by manacle's have kept me a slave Slip Sven or your men you'll be sent to your grave Row! Pull! Strain arms through the pain! Strength through weakness His Will I gain
_____________________________________ (His) Addendum: Free again I will be. The Lord be with me. The Spear of Destiny & other relics will be found & returned to the Holy Land. Sir Thomas de Charney, I remain. (His end comment) This is the first of a series of poems on the life of a Templar Knight. It will involve sequels to the above poem, but also prequels as well. I hope you enjoy, and put yourself in there with Sir Thomas. Thanks, Thomas This is my first poem on this website. I hope it is a good place to read and write poetry, and continue learning the craft. © 10 years ago, Thomas
My favorite poem is the following (although he posted 253 poems, so there are many that are wonderful):
Knight Forlorn
if he could move a mountain top and make her paths secure he'd bring her here o're thousand days a gallant man for sure
a knight in shining armors past this fallacy called love had made pell-mell to her as one their bodies fit like a glove
the mail he wore then lost its glow his riven heart be wrenched once magic to his lady's call his thirst forever quenched
(His comment): Common Meter, Best I could do; last line is meant to be spiritual; the faith that binds me to Jesus Christ regardless of my earthly status or sometimes fleshy desires © 4 years ago, Thomas
The last time I heard from Thomas was on Oct. 27, 2020. I had emailed a couple of my poems to him because I noted he hadn't been on Allpoetry for quite some time. These are his kind words: "Enjoyed both Valerie You are a good poet" Thomas
RIP dear friend; at last you are free from pain. I'll never forget you.

I just discovered one of the funny guys crossed over into the arms of heaven. I have missed our talks and thought of Brian often and how his health was and had he found any decent penny stocks he was interested in sharing for a quarter. We had some pretty good laughs together and am thankful for his fellowship and friendship. Until we see one another again someday. My prayer of peace and healing to Darena and Brenna.

My name is Henry Pennymon and I played tennis with Brian and his brothers in Joliet. We had recently reconnected last year through Facebook after some 40 years or so. I'm sorry to hear of his passing and I hope that his family can find some comfort in remembering the time that you had together!

I have many wonderful memories of Brian as a young boy and man. He was such a nice kid and I loved watching him play tennis along with his brothers. My late husband , Gamil Arida was the partner of Dr John Carney so we knew and loved Patty and John and the family. Gamil was a pretty good tennis player and had fun playing with Brian until Brian's game became too good to keep up with! I’m sending love and caring thoughts to Brian’s wife and daughter as well as all the family.

I want to offer my deepest and most sincere sympathy to all the Carney family. My father, William Osborn was your father's partner in Urology until his death in 1962. I remember your parents for their kindness and generosity. I too remember when the family moved into their home in Timberline and all the stories that your mom and dad shared. May you find peace and solace in knowing that Brian was one of a kind.
