Roger G. Ashamy
Age 93. Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home. He was born in Coal City, IL on November 22, 1916.
Professor Emeritus of Lewis University, Roger taught accounting and business for 30 years, receiving numerous teaching awards. He was highly respected by his students and peers. He received a B.S. and M.S. from the University of Illinois, and was on the track team. He served as Captain in the Army Finance Corps from 1941-1946 with assignments at Duke University, West Point and the Pentagon. He worked at the Ordinance Ammunition Command before teaching at Lewis University, and then worked part-time at the University of St. Francis, Wermer & Rogers CPA Firm, and Richard B. Vance Investments while teaching full-time. In 1960, Roger received the Elijah Watt Sells Award for having one of the top ten grades in the country on the Certified Public Accountant exam.
Preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Lizzie (nee Courey) Ashamy; and siblings, Fred, Ferris, and Adele Ashamy and Clara Lyons.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Eleanor E. (nee Bjornson) Ashamy of Joliet; daughters, Sharon (Ray) Skaggs of Joliet and Cori (Marc) Fuchs of Springfield; grandchildren, Kim (Eric Magee), Becky (Brad) Foster, Patrick and Maureen Skaggs; and great-granddaughter, Abbey Foster.
Funeral Services for Roger G. Ashamy will be Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 9:45 a.m. from the funeral home to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Roger Ashamy Endowed Accounting Scholarship at Lewis University or Joliet Area Community Hospice would be appreciated.
