Segundo Abrea, Sr.

Obituary of Segundo Callano Abrea, Sr.

Segundo Callano Abrea, Sr., age 83, of Joliet, and formerly of Minooka, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 9, 2021 in the emergency room of Amita Health St. Joseph Medical Center Joliet.

Born June 24, 1938 in the Philippines, he was the son of Toribio Abrea and Margarita Callano.  He received his degree in Marine Engineering while he worked in inter-island vessels starting as ship apprentice and sometimes utility boy at his shipping agency.  He worked upwards to becoming Chief Engineer in the cargo shipping industry for many years until his retirement. He preferred to work in the engine rooms even when he already had higher position. His work ethic gained him admiration so that he was preferred by many ship captains over younger engineers.

His generosity knows no bounds. His home was the home of many family members, both related by affinity and consanguinity, and he always provided opportunities to those who needed him. He read a lot of books and loved discussions on politics and history. He was a master at scrabble and a whiz at math. He loved the thrill of a good basketball game, but was also fond of the quiet of Solitaire. He was a tough father who was a stickler for discipline, but very soft when it came to his grandchildren.  When not working on his garden, he would be busy picking up a grandchild at school. He was a respected officer of both the local school’s Parents-Teachers’Association and the community’s Senior Citizens’ association.
