My husband and I have fond memories of Fr Kostelz as he married us on June 3, 1967, at St Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Kankakee, Il. Unlike most people, we were also able to have him join us at Mass to help co-celebrate our 50th Anniversary at St Margaret Mary’s, Herscher, Il. He was a jolly fellow and was always ready to share a few stories and jokes. He joined us for dinner at the “Catholic Table” on Saturdays after mass at our local restaurant. I know he’s at the Lords Table today. Pray for us Fr K. May you rest in eternal peace.

Fr. Dick was my favorite uncle, not just because he married my parents. He had an intellectual approach, dry wit, and great memory, and there was no end to the stories he could tell. I never got tired of listening to them. Regrettably, I did not spend nearly enough time with him for the amount of appreciation that I have for his integrity, his dedication to his vocation, and his single mindedness towards a lifetime of devotion and service to Our Lord.
In the photo section, I am including an image of the sunset outside my window moments after his passing. I regard this glorious image of rays of the setting sun as a message from God - that Father Kostelz has passed righteously into the hands of Lord, and the heavens are rejoicing! May you rest in peace with the angels above, Uncle Dick.

Uncle Dick played an important role in our family in many ways. He baptized 3 generations of nieces and nephews, as well as extended family babies. He celebrated first communions, confirmations, and marriages. And, unfortunately, he anointed and buried loved ones. We could always count on Uncle Dick for his support during the good times and the sad times.
Uncle Dick greatly looked forward to attending family gatherings whether it was a 1st Communion party, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter dinner to a birthday party. When the party was over, Uncle Dick would ask, “When is the next family gathering?” And of course, there was never a gathering where Uncle Dick forgot to tell one of his jokes. Sometimes he would laugh at his own jokes which made everyone laugh more. Uncle Dick will be greatly missed, but will always be remembered as a faithful, kind, and gentle soul.

Our family wishes to express our sympathy to Father Kostelz's family. When he served in Chebanse, a group of families helped him move to Cabery for his new assignment. We have many memories shared with him and that group. We also celebrated his birthday in July often. The last time was in 2019 and we got him at Herscher and took him to Clifton to eat. Father Wheeler from Chebanse also joined us. He reminded Father Kostelz of many memories they had together as priests. It was so interesting to listen to Father tell his usual jokes and stories.
We will miss him. John and Rita Adams

Father Dick was a great Uncle!!! We were kids when my dad passed away, but I remember like it was yesterday that Father Dick would often visit my mom and say a prayer with her in the hallway of the 105 Willow Ave. house when he left to drive back to his parish in Kankakee. Every few years or so when he got a new car, Father Kostelz would always give mom his old car. Although they were not always in great shape, I know he was just trying to help us out. The two I recall was a Plymouth Ferry II and a Dodge Duster...neither lasted that long, but I'll always be grateful for his thoughtfulness!!! Several visits ago, as an adult, I was glad I was able to thank him for his kindness and that it hadn't gone unnoticed. Rest in peace Uncle Dick!!!!

Father was in charge of the altar boys at St. Martin of Tours back in the 60s. He was a good man, always had a story to tell.
