Obituary of David J. Zembruski

Known by all as “Big Dave”

Age 58, of Shorewood, IL, passed away on Monday, September 27, 2021, at his home, after a brief hard battle against pancreatic cancer.  Big Dave, a lifelong area resident, was born on April 6, 1963, to the late Marilyn (nee Stuppy) and Edward Zembruski.   He attended Joliet grade schools and graduated with the Class of 1981 from Joliet West High School.  

He married the love of his life, Kimberly Johnstone, on September 25, 1988, at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet.   Little did Dave know he would inherit the undying love, friendship and support of the entire Johnstone family the day he and Kim exchanged vows.  

Dave is the beloved husband of 33 years to Kim; cherished and loving father to Kayla (fiancé Rick Faron), Jordyn and McKenna. He will continue to live on through them.  He was the cherished Godson of Sallie and Joe Dede; brother of Janet (Mike) Mikuska and Jim (Mary Lynn) Zembruski; brother-in-law to Kathy (Bob) Zupancic and Karen (Dave) Turk.   Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Dave and Kim’s lifelong devoted friends, Al and Kristen Julia, Adan, Mia Alvarado, David and Karen Gonzalez, Willy and Bushka Harper, cherished like his own children Madison and Garrett Harper, Tim, Mary Olivia and Lilliana Reece, Diana Kowalivzko and Kathy Layfield.  Not only was he known as Big Dave, but also, best friend, FU, Tio, and Skippy!!!!  He will be missed by his favorite faithful canine companion Lucy Lu!  

He is preceded in death by his parents and twin babies during pregnancy.   Dave’s in-laws, Bob and Jeanne (Nelson) Johnstone; and dear cousin, Mark Joseph Dede. 

Dave was employed for many years by the Joliet Country Club.   He was an avid Chicago Bears, Cubs and Blackhawks fan.   As well as a rounded, talented cook who could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.  

As it was Dave’s request, cremation rights have been accorded.   A tribute honoring Dave is being planned and will be announced at a later date.
