Lois A. Smrekar
(nee Pemble)

Lois A. Smrekar, passed away at the age of 88, on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at her home in Shorewood, surrounded by the love of her family.   Lois was born on January 12, 1933, the daughter of the late William and Anna (nee Horvat) Pemble.  She was born and raised in Joliet.  Lois was a graduate of Joliet Central High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree from the College of St. Francis.  She shaped the lives of many children during her 30 years as a substitute teacher in the Minooka and Joliet school system.  She was a member of Minooka Woman’s Club, Troy Seniors, and was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church.

When Lois wasn’t in the classroom, she was an active woman who enjoyed gardening, playing cards with friends, traveling, and spending time at her winter home in Sarasota, FL.  Lois will leave a void in the hearts of all who loved her. 

Lois is survived by her children, Mark (Tina) Smrekar, Robert (Mary) Smrekar, Alice Smrekar, and Kris (Deborah) Smrekar; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and her nephew and niece, Glenn and Phyllis Pemble.

She is preceded by her loving husband of 43 years, Edward; her parents; and her two brothers, Wayne Pemble and Glenn (Carolyn) Pemble.  

Visitation for Lois A. Smrekar will be held from 8:00 a.m. until time of prayers at 9:15 a.m., on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.), Joliet, IL, to Holy Family Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.  In accordance with the State of Illinois guidelines, masks will be required.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name to American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
