To the Diaz family and friends. Please accept our deepest condolences and prayers. May God comfort you all during this difficult time. Ricky was a close friend of our son Fabian. There was never a time that I did not see Ricky with a smile on his face and a great sense of humor. He was always a respectful young man and I was glad Fabian had such a good friend in his life. May your soul Rest In Peace Ricky.

Ricky was someone who never passed up the opportunity to smile at someone or make a heavy situation feel a little lighter. He lit up every room he walked into and truly had the biggest, most welcoming personality. His energy was irreplaceable and valued so much by our team. -Adrienne Montalone
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Diaz I am so sorry for your loss. Ricky really made uic athletics behind the scenes so much fun. He was a real friend and lit up any room. You would know if you needed something you can count on him. He had the best smile and could make anyone laugh. He was a blessing to everyone. -Stephanie Mroz
Ricky was a light at UIC. He always had a positive outlook on things and made me feel very welcome. I will miss seeing him in the halls of the athletic center. I know he will be smiling down on everyone with that infectious smile. Rest In Peace.
-Emma Hayes
Ricky was one of the best people I knew at UIC. He was always willing to help people when they needed it, and never failed to bring a smile on anyones face. He had a shining personality that reflected upon everyone in UIC. The faculty as well as us athletes will miss him immensely. -Megan Tang
There was never a doubt that Ricky would bring a smile to my face whenever I would see him. I will never forget my last encounter with Ricky as we stood in the foyer of the Athletic building. We stood there for about 5 minutes as he explained to me how much he appreciated MY help with making his colleague feel special on their birthday. Ricky's focus was nothing but making everyone else's priorities his own. There was never a time I didn't see Ricky giving his full effort's to help others. He will be missed, but never forgotten. Ricky- I look forward to pushing the boxes of Bubbly water down those narrow ramps together one day when we meet again.

On the 26th of August 2013 was the first time I met Ricky as I was approaching my dorm room for the first time. I remember his friendly face and behavior as he approached me and greeted me with exceptional warmth. He made me feel welcome, and I must say, if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have met a lot of people whom I now refer to as my UIC fam.
He helped me study, sign up for courses, and took me on a tour around the University. All of this he had done was for a kid he had just met from Jordan. I was surprised by his kindness and generosity; nobody I had to ever met was as kind as Ricky was. I am extremely grateful and thankful that I had met him, spent time with him, and more importantly learned from him.
One encounter that had changed my life indefinitely was a conversation that we had. We would always gather at Ricky’s room after or in between our classes. This time, I had just returned from class, and I walked into Rickys, and he instantly felt that I was not feeling okay so he kindly inquired about it, and it was after a few times of me complaining about anything and everything, and he urged me to stop complaining and start proactively working to better myself. I was moved by his words because he embodied his exceptional work ethic and dedication in every aspect of his life, his behavior and finally his relationships. I made some changes, moved schools, pursued my dream job, and I can say some of these things and an endless list of changes could have never happened if it wasn’t for him, his words and his continuous support.
When I look back, all I can think about is his compassion, love and friendliness. As we all say goodbye to him, I want you to be reminded that he had touched the lives of each and every person he had met, and for that his life will be celebrated today and everyday.
To Ricky’s family, girlfriend and loved ones I am sorry for your loss. May his beautiful soul rest in peace.

Ricky stood out the moment I met him. I was his orientation leader when he entered UIC and he was considered a polar bear like all students who were assigned to me. Ricky introduced himself, participated, smiled all the time, and embraced being able to call me "Mama Polar Bear". He later became my mentee and he excelled in all that he did. He showed so much interested in getting involved, making friends, and building a community at UIC. When he joined UIC Athletics, it was a perfect fit for his love of sports and his educational path. Ricky was warm, kind, brilliant, and it was truly a honor to know him and be part of his life.
Sending my love to his friends, family, partner, and the UIC family he has. We will miss you Ricky and the light you shined into our lives.

I grew up with Ricky. Same neighborhood, was only a short bike ride away. We were friendly in passing, but I had rarely seen him without a smile on his face. My condolences to all of his family and Sarah. Rest in piece buddy. I’m sorry I can’t be there for a final send off.

I am so deeply saddened to hear of this. Ricky was an amazing kid. I had the privilege of being his 5th grade teacher at Troy Craughwell. I truly remember his infectious personality and positivity always. He had so much to offer to our class discussions and it was obvious he loved learning new things. I would be at West watching one of my girls' sporting events and run into him frequently. He always remembered my name and had something nice to say. He was always smiling. Then we stayed in touch through facebook and I told him continuously how proud of him I was, and how proud Mrs. Clarke would be too. What a fine young man he turned into. Please accept my deepest condolences. Your family is in my prayers. I live in AZ so I can't attend any services but I am there in spirit. He will be missed and always loved.
