Much aloha to Maureen, Conor and the Gunnell family. Watching the service for Dan, I felt special that he would joke with me, calling me Brother Curt. I appreciated the Gunnell family in including me in their ohana. I feel fortunate in the memories of Dan and Don that I can recall upon. I was watching the online service for Dan when I lost the connection shortly after Conor was done. Maybe it was Dan’s way of saying the important part is done so just go on with your day. Take care until we meet again (a hui hou).

I met Dan as a student at UIC. He was a great ambassador of the Forensic Sciences and Firearms/Tool Marks. His sharp wit and up-front communication style made every conversation an engaging and entertaining experience. I always felt invigorated and energized after speaking with him. He was a man to look up to and I am thankful that I knew him.

I am so sorry for your loss and please know my thoughts and prayers are with you. I do think it worthwhile to share one particular story which speaks for Dan's character. When I was much younger and we were at a family function of some sort, Dan was holding a yellow paperback book, "The Once and Future King," by T.H. White. I had asked him about the book and he was sharing with me the details of what he had read. Then, out of nowhere, he handed me the book and told me to enjoy it. Years and years later, I ran in to him at a pizza place and told him that I still have the book. But more than the book, what most impresses me about this memory remains the following: He was clearly not done with the book! And so this memory -of generosity - is what I will more remember Dan for whenever I see an old, yellow book on the bookshelf and someday share it in the same way he did with me.
With Sympathy,
Chris

Dear Maureen, Conor, Kathy and Dona,
I am deeply sorry for your loss. I know Dan loved and cared deeply for those close to him, I also know Danny was one of a kind and is irreplaceable. I will always remember him as the fun loving, sometimes mischievous, and good-natured kid next door. I am proud of the way he handled adversity in tough times as well as the success and accomplishments throughout his all too short life. I remember so vividly how he enjoyed life and shared that energy with those around him. I am fortunate to have known my little cousin in many stages of his life's journey, those lasting memories always bring a smile to my face.
With sympathy, love and respect,
Cousin Tom

Rochelle and I would like to extend our sincerest sympathy and condolences to Maureen and Conor, as well as the extended Gunnell and Birmingham families.
Having essentially raised our kids together, we tended to be fixtures at each others' family events. Dan and Maureen will always be "Mr. Dan" and "Ms. Maureen" to Katie and Will and we were always "Mr. Bill" and "Ms. Rochelle" to Conor. Our families had a lot of great adventures together, heading out on a whim to find a firearms, airplane, or railroad museum we hadn't been to before. The highlight was definitely our Washington D.C. trip a few years back - four adults, three kids, and all our luggage in a minivan! We still talk about that one...
On a professional level, I have much in my life to thank Dan for. Although not directly involved in training me as a Firearms Examiner, he was one of my early bosses and took pride in challenging all of the examiners under his supervision to be the best we could be. I hear similar stories from others he worked with as he advanced through ISP. As our friendship developed, he contributed much to my professional development both as a trainer for ISP as well as within AFTE. I am fortunate and proud to have followed in his footsteps both as a trainer and in the leadership track in AFTE. I'll be forever grateful for his guidance.
As with most friendships, the majority of the stories and anecdotes I could throw out there would mean a lot to Dan and me but very little to anyone else reading this so I will keep that to a minimum. One of my favorite memories of Dan is how excited he would get about Halloween and the decorating that went along with it. I always looked forward to the annual pilgrimage around Chicagoland to view the displays. He was so careful about crafting the route so that we had a good sampling of displays and would always point out little details most of us would have missed or explain how an effect was created. His absolute passion for anything that caught his interest was one of his defining features.
Until we meet again, Mr. Dan. I love you and miss you, my brother.

Sorry to learn of the passing of a true legend. I will always remember starting my career at ISP with Dan as not only my trainer, but also a mentor during training and beyond with many laughs (I can still hear it ring through my head as I type), discussions, and debates along the way. My heart goes out to Maureen, Connor and others during this time of mourning Dan's passing althoug the life he shared with us is truly one to be celebrated.

Maureen and Conor,
I am so sorry for the tremendous loss of Dan in your lives. I will miss swapping many family memories with him from Eagle Scout to how to be the best manager. I will always remember his many stories and his comrade at the Joliet Crime lab. He was passionate about everything he did. May God bless you during this difficult time.
