Obituary of Sr. Bernadine Hasse, OSF
Sister Bernadine Hasse (Robert Marie) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home on December 9, 2021. A native of Joliet, Illinois, Sister Bernadine was one of nine children born to the late Robert and Marie (Grill) Hasse on March 6, 1929. She was preceded in death by her sisters Rita Blackburn and Sister Maria Hasse, OSF (Janet), and brothers Robert, Richard and Rev. James Hasse, S.J. She is survived by her sister Mary Ann, brothers John (Debra) and William, along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Sister Bernadine earned her BA and MA in Theology from the College of St. Francis, Joliet, and her MEd in Counseling and Guidance from Loyola University, Chicago. She primarily taught middle grades in Catholic grade schools in Ohio, Colorado and Illinois, and served as principal of St. Paul the Apostle in Joliet before beginning a 22-year teaching career at St. Joseph School in Manhattan, Illinois. She also served as organist and music teacher at several parishes. She later worked in the business office of the Sisters of St. Francis and served as a teacher’s aide at the Franciscan Learning Center before taking on community service at Our Lady of Angels. Two of her great loves were sports of every kind and doing outdoor work of all kinds. She was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate for 71 years.
A private Memorial Mass will be celebrated. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Romeoville.
