Obituary of Edith Carol Smith

Age 86, of Channahon, IL passed away late Wednesday evening, December 29, 2021 at home, surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

She was born July 28, 1935 to the late Erma Mae (nee Hancock) and Virgil Todd of Minooka, IL.

She was the fun and loving wife of nearly 70 years to the love of her life, Leo J. Smith, the beloved mother of daughters Roxanne (Rene “Skip”) Lanoue, Benita (Smith) Schilling, and son Leo C. Smith; devoted grandmother of Matthew (Liz) Lanoue, Aimee (Aaron) Krall-Lanoue, Jonathan Schilling, Rachel (Justin) Osborne-Schilling, and Jael Smith; proud great-grandmother of Paige Lanoue, Graham Krall-Lanoue, Rene Krall-Lanoue, Lyric Smith, Ledger Smith, Adeline Osborne, Nick Stablein, and Mary Stablein; dear sister of Bonnie (late Al) Torkelson and Glenda “Micky” Todd. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents Virgil and Erma Mae Todd, two brothers Gene Todd and PV2 Leo C. Todd, two sisters Phyllis Brown and Beverly Pogliano, and one infant brother.

Carol attended Minooka High School but chose an engagement ring over a class ring when she met the love of her life, Leo Smith, and married him at the age of 16 on February 1, 1952. They remained a loving, dedicated, and devoted couple till the end. After raising three children she and Leo spent their winters in Florida and their summers in Minnesota for over 30 years until neither could continue to make the journey. Carol will be remembered as a strong, fun, and caring woman who, at times, managed above-average responsibilities for her family and extended family without reward. She loved music, dancing, meeting people, and working or taking part in social and/or public environments. She was known and loved by many for her happy, friendly and social personality. We love you and will miss you so much GG.
