Obituary of Janice C. Smith
Jann, age 84 of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Amita Health St. Joseph Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Howard and Beatrice (Webb) Simons. Jann graduated from Woodland High School in 1955 attending Joliet Junior College and was in the Silver Cross Nursing Program. She married John “Jack” Smith on June 20, 1959 at St. Johns Catholic Church. In 1987 she started working as an administrative assistant at Christian Brothers Services until 2002.
She was a parishioner of the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus Parish for over 60 years and was on the parish council, school and athletic boards. Jann coached and was on the board for the Joliet Softball Association (JSA). She loved playing golf and was part of the Lady Elks League. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and reading. She particularly loved spending her winters in Naples, FL.
Jann is survived by her husband; two daughters, Nancy (Wayne) Southcott of Portishead, England and Laurie (Brian) Malloy of Shorewood; three grandchildren, Zachary (Amber) Smith, Jacob (fiancé Bianca DeMonte) McLurkin and Hope Southcott; great-grandson, Jack Smith; sister, Karen (Dean) Bundy; her aunt, Sally St. Clair of Sarasota, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
She is preceded in death by her son, John; her parents; sisters, JoAnn Wilhelm and Kathy Cole; in-laws, Lee and Marjorie Smith; and sister-in-law, Helenlee Smith.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the doctors and nurses of the St. Joseph Medical Center ICU and to Lightways Hospice for the excellent care and comfort they provided.
Visitation for Janice C. Smith will be Monday, February 7, 2022 at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd., Joliet from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at 10:45 a.m. from the funeral home chapel to the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, 604 N. Raynor Avenue, Joliet, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name to Lightways Hospice or the Cathedral of St. Raymond would be appreciated.
