Obituary of Sister Carol Jander, OSF
Sister Carol Jander (Paulanne) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home on March 14, 2022. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Sister Carol was one of four children born to the late Paul and Anne (Wene) Jander on July 18, 1938. She is survived by her brothers Thomas (Marlene), Daniel (Donna-deceased), Stephen (Marsha), nieces and nephews. Sister Carol is lovingly remembered by her faithful friend, Sister Margaret McGuckin, OSF, with whom she served as Co-Director of the Franciscan Learning Center, and three generations of students.
After graduating from St. Mary High School in Columbus, Ohio, she earned her BA in Education from the College of St. Francis, Joliet, Illinois. She holds a MS in Education/ Administration and Supervision from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. Sister Carol’s lifelong ministry was in education and administration. She taught primary and junior high grades, served as consultant for the Joliet Diocese Catholic Schools Office. With Sister Margaret McGuckin, they fulfilled their dream of beginning an early childhood preschool. After starting a program in Frankfort, Illinois, as St. Anthony’s Preschool, they brought their expertise to Joliet in 1979 with the birth of the Franciscan Learning Center, which operated from 1979 until 2017. Sister Carol moved on to serve the residents and staff at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home with many creative art projects. Sister Carol was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate for 64 years.
All are invited to a visitation on Friday, March 18, at Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road at Essington, Joliet, IL from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be private. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Romeoville, IL.
