Obituary of John Harmon

John "Jack" Harmon John "Jack" Harmon, 74, of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Joliet, died December 11, 2008, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, FL, from complications of a stroke. John Joseph Harmon was born July 16, 1934, in Ottawa, Ill., to Joseph and Regina (O'Donnell) Harmon. He graduated from MarquetteHigh School, Ottawa, in 1952. He received his bachelor's degree in 1956 from the former St.AmbroseCollege (now University) in Davenport, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic from 1957-59 at Fort Knox, Ky. He married Sharon Andresen on April 11, 1959, in Clinton, Iowa. He was a loan officer at the former Plainfield National Bank (now First Midwest Bank), from 1969-94. For part of his tenure, he was one of the bank's vice presidents. He retired with 25 years of service. Jack was a firefighter with the Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department for more than 25 years and was Firefighter of the Year in 1989. He was also a member of the Plainfield Rotary Club, for which he was president from 1986-87. He was a member of St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church and a life member and Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. Jack and Sharon moved from Joliet to Bettendorf in 2007 and spent winters in Lakeland, Fla. He was active with the St. Ambrose University Alumni Association. With his wife, he served Sunday dinners at a meal site in Davenport. He was an avid reader. Jack loved sports, especially the Chicago Bears, and he enjoyed playing with his only grandchild. Jack is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Bettendorf; one son, Joseph Harmon of Aurora, Ill.; two daughters, Margaret Harmon of Chicago, and Kathleen (John) Kuhl of Davenport; one granddaughter, Gwendolyn Kuhl of Davenport; one brother and sister-in-law, Leo and Janet Harmon of Ottawa; three nieces and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services for Jack Harmon will be Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 9:45 a.m. from the funeral home chapel to St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Plainfield, for Mass at 10:30 a.m.. Interment will be in St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Cemetery. A general memorial fund has been established. Visitation Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at: FRED C.
