Obituary of Robert Edward Martin
Robert Edward “Marty” Martin, age 91, formerly of Chicago, Lockport, and South Bend, IN, passed away Monday, August 22, 2022 at Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center, Joliet, with his family by his side.
Born February 13, 1931 in Chicago, he was the son of Joseph and Helen Martin, and was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He used his talents and gifts in many capacities throughout his career, including working as a carpenter and repairman. When something broke, you called Marty.
Marty was a man with many titles: husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, Marine, fishing buddy, and devoted friend. If you were fortunate enough to know him, you count yourself blessed. He had a welcoming personality, a quick wit, and a million jokes he was always ready to share.
Marty and his loving wife, Mary, were soul mates, sharing 67 years together and still so in love. Their marriage can serve as an example of how to be a devoted husband, an incredible father, grandfather, and great-grandfather worth admiring. Gambling trips to Vegas, fishing trips to Canada, and the everyday joy of family life will never be the same without this caring, loving and amazing man. Marty set a tone for his family that will endure forever, and an example to be followed by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Heaven truly gained an angel when God called him home.
Marty is survived by his beloved wife, Mary T. (Burns) Martin; three loving children, Don (Eileen) Martin, John (Rose) Martin, and Kathy (Michael) Reiser; five adoring grandchildren, Robert (Jacqueline) Martin, William Martin, Daniel Martin, Natalie (David) Flageole and John Martin; and three dear great-grandchildren, Levi and Alice Flageole and Maren Jordan Martin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, and one sister.
