Jerry William Lyte


Jerry William Lyte, age 74, formerly of Shorewood, IL, passed away early on Saturday, November 5, 2022. He was born on March 24, 1948, to the late Pilot Jr. and Martha R. (nee Woodson) Lyte.  Jerry was a 1966 graduate of Bruce High School in Dyersburg, TN. He received his BS in Agricultural Science from Tennessee State University, and his Master’s in counseling from Bradley University, IL. Jerry was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Mr. Lyte retired from the Illinois Department of Corrections wherein he had a distinguished career as warden of three correctional facilities. Jerry was presently pastor of The New Church of the Holy Ghost in Joliet, IL. A well-respected family man and community leader, Jerry Lyte dedicated his time to biblical scholarship, ministering to the needs of others, traveling, teaching, and applying his horticultural skills around his home and community.


Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Lucille Lyte; children Gerald (Debra), Kenneth, (Denise) Lyte and Tina (Denard) Williams; step-children Marcil, Phoebe, Carl, Tangela, and Enri; siblings Helen Robinson and Sadie (Joe) Travis; grandchildren, Caleb, Joshua, Kendra, Najee, Courtney, Amber, Chrissy, Ainsley, and Riley; four great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.


Visitation Services will be held on Friday, November 11 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Roads, Joliet, IL. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday November 12 at the New Church of the Holy Ghost, 952 Garvin Street. Joliet, IL. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park II, Joliet.


In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to “Jerry’s Wish.” Donations can be submitted through Cash App to his wife Kathleen Lyte @KathleentLyte.
