I am very saddened to see our friend leave us. I worked with Dr. Birch and he was such a genuine friend and pleasure to be with. We had a lot of fun time in our classroom! The student sure loved him as well! He always had a crowd of students around him and loved supporting their sports and activities. All 4 our my kids got to know him at school and loved him.
Your family is in my prayers. I will never forget his genuine care for others. He will be missed .
Blessings,
Katie Easton & family

He was one of my favorite teachers at BGHS. I’ll always recall the day the shuttle exploded in January of 1986. He scraped what we were going to do in Psych class and said let’s just talk about how we are all feeling about this.

Dear Family,
I knew Chuck at JHHS before he was Dr. Birch. He was a mentor to this young teacher and we had fun together. I followed him as his years at BGHS passed. Finally in his later years, he was a great friend on Facebook as that time has brought me much closer to him and our pal, Dr. Zamir. I will mis him, but he will always be part of your Ohana.

I had the privilege of studying both Sociology and Psychology under Dr. Birch my senior year ('78) at John Hersey High School. He was an OUTSTANDING teacher. In addition to being the consummate gentleman, he was intelligent, thoughtful, attentive, sincere, compassionate, encouraging, and always of the utmost good humor.
Though I'm now 25 years older than he was in 1978, to this day I cite lessons learned in his classroom. Among them, the poster hanging on his classroom bulletin board depicting four cows in a field, each standing in its own quadrant created by two intersecting split-rail fences, each with its head stuck through the fence eating the indistinguishable grass of a neighboring cow's quadrant. So much of what still ails the human race was captured in that profound but simple poster.
Another lesson came under far more serious circumstances. In response to an attempt that year by Chicago-area Nazis to march in Skokie, Illinois, Dr. Birch, who frequently hosted guest speakers invited, with the approval of our class, a Brown Shirt to speak in our classroom. Through Dr. Birch's unwavering belief in the intellect of his students and the power of critical thinking, he knew we'd see through the slogans and bromides the Nazis used to mask their pathological hate. We saw their venom, as he knew we would. What a risk he took to let us discover the truth for ourselves.
As others here have noted, he changed thousands of lives. I will always be grateful that one of them was mine.
God bless, Chuck Birch. May his memory forever be a blessing.

Dr. Birch had a significant impression on many lives including my own. He was my friend, coach, and a guru-guide on life. Chuck was a modern-day Socrates in many respects. He was knowledgeable beyond nearly all but yet questioned everything. He was a natural in the classroom. Ask any of his students and they would tell you that Dr. Birch had a genuine interest in their lives and that they would jump through hoops for him. I will miss our summer chats at the Morris City Pool about everything under the sun and our weekly phone conversations about the day's political events. Condolences to family and friends. May Chuck rest in peace and continue to guide our way in life.

Dr. Birch was a larger than life influence on me as I began my teaching career in D214. His ability to connect with students was unparalleled as he guided, mentored, and encouraged so many students and staff in so many ways. We laughed together, shed a few tears together, shared many life moments together and he still is to this very moment, one of the most inspirational role models that I have been so fortunate to teach along side with me. His memory will live on in the thousands of students and staff that he touched. I will miss his phone calls, his funny emails, his touching family stories of how very special his grandchildren and family meant to him. What a gifted educator and better man. Sincerely, D. Baldwin and family
