Sister Lucille (Mary Albertus) Adelmann passed into eternal life March 26, 2023, at Ascension Villa Franciscan Place. She was 96 years of age. This summer, she would have celebrated 75 years as a Joliet Franciscan. Through these years, her joyful presence was witnessed in her ministries of teaching, nursing, and administration.
Born in Lockport, Illinois, to the late Agnes (Brankey) and Harry Adelmann, Sister Lucille was baptized at her home parish, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Joliet, Illinois. She had one sister, Evelyn Rose McGowan, who also preceded her in death. Sister Lucy, as she was known, is survived by her devoted nieces, nephews, and many extended family members. She will be fondly remembered by all those who were touched by her compassion and care.
Sister Lucy graduated from St. John the Baptist Grade School, and St. Francis Academy (Joliet Catholic Academy). She received her BA from the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis), Joliet, Illinois, and her MS from The University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana. Receiving her RN from Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing - Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, prepared her for a career in the medical field.
The early ministry that Sister Lucy embraced was education. She taught math and science at St. Francis Academy (Joliet Catholic Academy), Joliet, Illinois, and at Bishop Ready High School, Columbus, Ohio. After 20 years in education, Sister served as Director of Nursing for the sisters at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, and as a staff nurse for Joliet Community Health Services. In 1988, Sister Lucy became the Director of the Will-Grundy Medical and Dental Clinic, Joliet, Illinois. Moving forward in her career, she served as a Hospice Chaplain and spiritual caregiver for Joliet Area Community Hospice. From 1999 to 2009, Sister Lucy was the Director of Pastoral Care at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois. She enjoyed volunteering as a teacher of math at the Dillard Harris Education Center of Guardian Angel Community Services and was an operator at the Crisis Line of Will County.
