Obituary of Alice E. Malloy
Alice E. Malloy, nee McCauley, age 85, of Shorewood and Tiskilwa, IL passed away Saturday, June 24, 2023 at home.
Born April 3, 1938 in Tiskilwa, IL, she was the youngest child of Dennis H. and Alice (nee Johnson) McCauley. She attended Tiskilwa Grade School and High School before enrolling in Illinois State University, Normal, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She later completed numerous graduate courses at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
Alice taught kindergarten for Troy Community Consolidated School District #30C for 37 years, and during her retirement served as a substitute teacher over 16 years for a total of over 50 years in the classroom.
Her love, passion and dedication for teaching was unmatched by any other in the field; a true, rare diamond. She was loved fiercely by all her students, their parents and her colleagues. Many of them became her lifelong best friends. She was selfless with her time and went above and beyond in every aspect of her career, both inside and outside expectations. She passed her passion down to her daughter, Erin, who was a special education teacher and then an administrator for many years. Her time in the classroom was immensely missed after her retirement but her love for teaching didn’t stop. During Covid, she had the special privilege of homeschooling her grandson and the light of her life, Connor James. She would spend hours prepping materials and implementing engaging lesson plans. She and Connor always had a special bond but during this time, they were inseparable and her eyes would twinkle as she watched him learn and grow. In her frequent phone calls to her triplet grandchildren, Kai, Reid and Adelyn, she would talk with them about school, their strengths and tell stories about her teaching. When she visited, she always brought books and crafts and of course, fun. They will always think of their Mimi as a teacher. She is an immense loss to the educational world.
Alice was an active a faithful member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Joliet, and was an active volunteer for all her children’s activities. Alice also served as a volunteer at the Rialto Square Theatre where she also served on the Board several times and various other committees, and would have received her 40 Years of Service pin this year. She was also a devoted fan of her beloved Chicago Bulls.
Alice will be missed by her children, grandchildren and close friends.
She was married to Michael Dennis Malloy for 50 years prior to his passing December 21, 2017. Her parents; two brothers, Leonard McCauley and Edwin McCauley; and one sister, Patricia Beatty also preceded her in death.
Surviving are her loving and devoted children, Sean Malloy, Kevin (Barbi) Malloy, and Erin Colleen (Tony) Lalich; four beautiful grandchildren, Reid Edison, Adelyn Grace, and Kai Shamus Lalich and Connor James Malloy; one brother, Paul (the late Gail) McCauley of Hennepin, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
