Obituary of Gerald D. Atkinson
Gerald D. Atkinson, passed away peacefully, at the age of 78, on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Lightways Hospice, with the love of his family by his side. Gerald was born on November 1, 1944, in Jacksonville, IL. He was the son of the late Ralph and Alta (nee Lunney) Atkinson, and graduated from Bluffs High School. Gerald married Beverly Hanna, and the two settled in the Joliet area and raised their family. Gerald worked for many years at the Amoco Chemical Plant in Joliet, and then BP in Whiting, IN. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, golfing, and time at the casino. Most of all, he enjoyed time with his family, and was a loving father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
Gerald is survived by his daughters, Susan (Scott) Hansen, Geri (Bill) Hulbert, and Jennifer (Andy) DeYoung; his six grandchildren, Brittany (Jordan) Cox, Courtney (Steve) Munis, Billy (Emily) Hulbert, Ashley (Jason) Baron, Hanna DeYoung, and Alyssa DeYoung; three great-grandchildren, Avery, Lucas, and Olivia; his longtime companion, Sandra Collins; three sisters, Alice, Lois, and JoAnn; and brother, Kenneth.
He is preceded by his loving wife Beverly Atkinson (1996); his parents; sister Merna; brothers Robert and Ronald; and beloved pet Jack.
Funeral Services for Gerald D. Atkinson will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, August 4, 2023, at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.), Joliet, IL. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m.
