Obituary of Donald J. Breen

Donald J. Breen, of Shorewood, IL, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, just a few hours shy of his 103rd birthday.  Donald was born on August 10, 1920, to the late Celia and Keyron Breen.  He was a lifelong Joliet resident.  A U.S. World War II Army Veteran who served under General George Patton with the 80th Infantry, Blue Ridge Mountain Division.

Donald is survived by his two daughters, Sharon (Steve) Lorenz and Susan (James) Fritz; four grandchildren, Marjorie (Erika) Lorenz and Matthew (Jackie) Lorenz, Amy (Fiance Mark Prosser) Fritz and Lisa Fritz; and eight great grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Don will also be missed by his good friend Mark Huston as well as his caregivers, Melba and Junie.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Jeanette (nee McClintock) Breen; his parents; brothers, Howard, Grant, Keyron and Joseph Breen; sisters, Winifred McEvilly and Mary Korst.

Don retired from Olin Chemical after many years of faithful service.  He enjoyed playing cards, visiting casinos, gardening and being the “candy man” at the Timbers of Shorewood while residing there.

Visitation for Donald J. Breen will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:30 a.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet, IL.  Interment will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the Will County Veterans Assistance Commission, 2400 Glenwood Avenue, Joliet, IL 60435.
