Obituary of Dr. Leo Anthony Wrona

Dr. Leo A. Wrona passed away peacefully, at the age of 81, on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at Lightways Hospice home in Joliet, IL, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in Chicago, IL, on November 22, 1941.  Leo graduated from Weber High School in Chicago, IL, and Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, IL.  He completed his medical internship at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital in Johnstown, PA, and his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago, IL.

Leo was a well-known and beloved Doctor, serving patients in the Joliet area for over 35 years.  Through his hard work and dedication, he delivered countless children into this world.  Leo will also be remembered for his involvement as President of Medical Staff at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Joliet, President of Will-Grundy County Medical Society, member of Will County Board of Health, Co-Founder of Will-Grundy County Medical Clinic, and member of Knights of Columbus Holy Family Council #15732, Plainfield American Legion #13, and Joliet Elks #296.  Leo proudly served his country in the Army while stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. 

Leo’s family always came first.  Leo was a supporter of Catholic education, especially Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, IL.  Leo will not only be cherished for his commitment to his church and community but his unwavering dedication to his closest friends and family.  He loved square dancing and traveling to the National Square Dance Conventions.  In retirement, Leo loved traveling with family and friends, going on many trips and cruises, and visiting family in Poland.

Leo is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Judith Ann (nee Janiszewski) Wrona; his children, Diane (George, deceased) Irvin of Joliet, IL; Margaret (Tony) Rentz of LaGrange Highlands, IL; Joseph (Kristen) Wrona of Golden, CO; and Sharon (Richard) Marasco of Elwood, IL; grandchildren, Samantha and Daniel Irvin; Andrew, Nicole, and Jenna Rentz; Lt. Jessy Marasco, Rachel and Melissa Marasco; niece, Karen (Kevin) Koch of Ft. Atkinson, WI; and great-niece Jennifer Koch.  He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Joanne (nee Janiszewski) Gawron, and brother-in-law, John (Margaret, nee Steffenhagen) Janiszewski, and many nieces and nephews.  Leo’s special rescue dog, Angel, also survives.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph S. and Lillian (nee Schimanski) Wrona, one brother and sister-in-law, Joseph S. and Barbara (nee Ewald) Wrona, in-laws, Sigmund and Mae (nee Majewski) Janiszewski, and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Gawron.

Visitation for Dr. Leo A. Wrona will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd., Joliet, IL.  

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023, at 9:15 a.m., from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home to Holy Family Catholic Church, 600 Brook Forest Avenue, Shorewood, IL, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m.  Fr. John Merkalis will be officiating.  Interment will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Road, Elwood, IL, with full military honors held under the auspices of the United States Army and the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad.
