Carl Thomas

Obituary of Carl Ellis Thomas

Carl Ellis Thomas, 63, a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, determination, and a deep love for family and friends. He was born on May 4, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan, and departed from this world on September 1, 2023 after a long battle with cancer.

Carl’s journey in life was marked by a strong work ethic that began at a young age. He started working as a babysitter at the tender age of 12, and at 15, he bought his first car, the Green Hornet, a Ford, showcasing his early independence.

In July 1978, he embarked on a journey from El Paso to Dallas, Texas. Carl was a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys and moved to Dallas to be closer to his favorite football team. While in Dallas, Carl secured a position with Tom Thumb, a grocery store, ultimately becoming the head of the Grocery department.

Carl welcomed his son Thomas Berkley Jackson on August 23, 1983, with Shelley Jackson. He made a heartfelt request for divine guidance in raising his son in a safe environment, which led to their move to Illinois in the summer of 1993.

In Illinois, Carl began his employment as a Casino Dealer at the Empress Casino, the Majestic Star Casino and lastly, Harrah’s Casino, where he made lifelong friends among his coworkers. He was a household name as one of the best dealers for his 25 years of employment. Because of his phenomenal customer service skills, positive attitude and technical abilities, he was featured in collateral across the Harrah’s property for many years.

Carl had a variety of hobbies that brought joy to his life, including watching his beloved Chicago White Sox, running, exercising, tending to his houseplants and garden, and enjoying music while entertaining friends and family. In addition to his other passions, Carl had a keen interest in staying informed about current events and politics. He found enjoyment in watching MSNBC and engaging in spirited political debates with friends and loved ones. His willingness to engage in thoughtful discussions showcased his commitment to staying informed and sharing his perspectives.

Carl’s family was a source of strength, support, and love. He is survived by his parents, Johnnie Mae and Rufus Thomas Jr., son Thomas Jackson, 3 grandchildren, Taysie, Christopher (CJ), Mariah, siblings Ricky Thomas, Lolita Thomas, Sharon Thomas, Selina Smith and Francine Gildon, 4 nieces, 6 nephews, 4 grandnieces and 6 grandnephews.

Carl will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his spirit and the memories he created will live on forever. A man of faith, Carl held Psalm 23 close to his heart as his favorite scripture.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Carl’s name to the Ronald McDonald House in honor of the exceptional care provided to his grandson, Christopher, following his birth.
