Obituary of Sandra L. Pope
Age 82, of Joliet, passed away peacefully at Alden Estates of Shorewood on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, with her loving family by her side. Sandra was born and raised in Joliet and was a lifelong area resident. She was born on September 9, 1941, the daughter of the late Raymond and Fern Surges. Sandra attended St. Mary Magdalene grade school and was part of the first graduating class there. She was also a graduate from St. Francis Academy with the class of 1959. Sandra was a devoted mother to her children, always involved in their day to day activities, getting them to and from, and anything else they needed help with. After her children had grown, she went back to school, and in 2002 she became a certified Telemetry Tech and worked at St. Joseph Hospital for many years. Sandra loved to travel with friends and family. She made many trips to Florida, and enjoyed visiting the ocean and collecting sea shells. She especially enjoyed her final trip Sanibel Island.
Sandra is survived by her children, Theresa Galounis, Lisa (Rick) Herron, and Raymond Pope; She was also affectionately know as “Grandma Quack” by her grandchildren, Chad, Alex (Danielle), Christopher, Daniel, and Sarah (Mike) Galounis, and Nicholas, Richard, Jr., and Nathaniel Herron; great-grandsons, Mason & Cole; and her lifelong friends that were by her side until the last days, Pat, Rosemary, Marilyn and Carole.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 42 years, Richard Pope; her parents; her in-laws, Leo and Dorothy Pope; sister-in-law, Kathy Pope; son-in-law, Chris Galounis; special cousin, Donna Gibson; and many wonderful aunts and uncles.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Alden Estates for the exceptional care they gave their mother in her final weeks.

All friends and relatives are invited to celebrate Sandra’s life starting with visitation on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 from 4-8 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black(at Essington) Rd., Joliet. Funeral services will be the following morning, Wednesday, October 18, starting at the funeral home chapel at 9:00 a.m. and proceding to St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Romeoville.
