Obituary of Peter Harris
Peter Harris was born on August 15, 1940 in Starkville, MS, he was one of 16 children born to Letha (Jones) and Benjamin Harris. Peter departed this life peacefully on Sunday, November 5, 2023 after a brief illness.
Peter moved to Joliet Illinois in 1958 and worked as a butcher at Greenvalley Grocery Store, until he joined labor local # 75 where he worked for many years until his retirement in 1992.
In 1972 Peter married the late Hattie M. Harris (Short). To this union two daughters were born and he gained two bonus children.
Peter loved to work in his yard, barbecuing, cooking and playing pool. He also loved nice cars, Buick was his ride of choice, always waxed and shiny.
He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and loving wife, Maria G. Harris (Johnson); one brother, James (late Rosie) Mahoney Harris of Joliet, IL; one son, Dennis Holmes; two daughters, Petrina (Isaac Banks III) of Matteson, IL and Christin M. Harris of Denver, CO; bonus daughter, Pamela R. Short of Joliet, IL; bonus son, John (Jedah) Short of Huntsville, AL; and two grandchildren, Alexis Short of Joliet, IL and Jontel Short of Denver, Co; godson, Derrius Sims of Joliet; along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The family of Peter Harris will be forever grateful to Dr. Ramadurai, Dr. Leung and Dr. Goode and all the staff and nurses for the special care and compassion afforded Peter.
The family also wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, calls, texts and every act of kindness.
Visitation for Peter Harris will be Wednesday, November 15, 2023 from 4-6 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.) Joliet. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 16, 2023 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 402 Singleton Place, Joliet, where visitation will resume in church from 9:00 am until services begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name can be made to Mt. Zion Church, 402 Singleton Place, Joliet.
