Dear DeAnn and Family,
You are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Please let me know if there is ANYTHING that I can do for you. Please free to call me* (360-961-8090) ANYTIME — if you just want a shoulder to cry on, or someone to reminisce with about Mile, or just need support when you feel sad and are missing him.
*That goes for ALL of you, even though you kids probably don't know or remember me very well. Your father was my best friend in law school and one of the best friends anybody could ever hope to have in this life. You may not remember me, or you may. My son Coleby and I visited you and your family in Chicago seven years ago. We went to iFly together…at least some of us did. Coleby spent most of the day playing at your house, while your dad and I caught up. I will try to post or send you some pictures from this trip.
I am so sorry that I was not able to fly to Chicago to attend the funeral in person. I did watch the video online, but it is far from the same. Please know that I would have been there if there was any way that I could have made the trip; but I realized that I was dreaming if I thought that my body was in any condition to try to “just make a quick flight to Chicago at Christmas time.” It has been many years since I have had the capacity to fly any significant distance without assistance, as I use a walker all of the time now due to scoliosis and flexion contracture at most of my major joints. I have suffered from several fairly severe physical disabilities for many years now, a fact which your father never let keep us from maintaining our friendship throughout our lives — no matter where you guys moved, and no matter how restricted my activities were, and no matter how far out of his way he had to drive to stay in touch with me at regular intervals, when he flew to Washington for conferences. No matter how much time had passed since I had seen or spoken to him last, it was always like no time had passed whenever we saw each other again. We instantly picked back up from wherever we had left off, like we had just seen each other the day or week before. Michael is one of the few people in this world who I would say truly knew me, and always loved and accepted me for who I was at the time (even when that changed). I will miss him so much.
(**I echo the sentiments of the gentleman who said the following about Mike: "Michael was a good and caring man who was passionate about the things he believed in and who deeply loved DeAnn and their children. His passing is a tremendous loss.”I couldn't have said it better myself.)
I have not had too many close friends in this life, who I have stayed in touch with throughout almost my entire life. Michael was one of the very few, and will alway have a special place in my heart and memories. His passing is a tremendous loss.
I owe great thanks to DeAnn for NEVER being a jealous wife (or girlfriend) and never objecting to Mike and I maintaining a lifetime close friendship. God bless you DeAnn for always treating me like one of the family and always supporting the continuing friendship between Mike and me. Not too many women would have been so encouraging about their husband having a lifetime friendship with another woman (once even a young and beautiful one…LOL….), like the one that Michael and I always shared. Never once (that I know of), did you ever try to discourage Mike from driving up to 100 miles out of his way), to see me when he was in Washington state; or (at times) hanging out in his hotel room, because that was where we had to hang out and be ourselves. Thank you so much for allowing me to have such a beautiful, lifetime friendship, with such a wonderful man who was absolutely devoted to his wonderful wife and children, (two qualities about him that I have always loved and admired him for)!

Mike was a wonderful person and a good friend. I served as Executive Director of the Uniform Law Commission in the early 2000s and Mike was nominally my deputy but over time became like a trusted partner. He was so competent and such a hard worker – he gave up so many evenings and weekends to get work done and I remember a Christmas eve when we frantically put together a last-minute grant proposal. But what stood out most about Mike was his humanity – he was good and caring man who was passionate about the things he believed in and who deeply loved DeAnn and their children. His passing is a tremendous loss.

DeAnn and family,
I am so sorry for this tremendous loss. Mike was a wonderful mentor and a true friend. It was such a privilege to work with and know him. I learned so much from him during our time at Enova and am grateful we had the opportunity to reconnect this past year. To this day, a copy of Robert’s Rules of Order sits on my bookcase and I’ll forever think of Mike and crack a smile that he thought to gift this to me. He will be missed. I am thinking of you all and sending my love.

So many great memories of walking the halls of state capitals around the U.S. fighting to keep credit availability for everyday people. That smile and glint in his eye always told me we were winning. :)
I am sending my love and prays for all of you.
