Obituary of Allen G. Cowles
Allen G.Cowles, passed away at the age of 74, on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at his home in Joliet. Allen was born in Oak Park, IL, on September 27, 1949, the son of the late George and Dorothy (nee Mezera) Cowles. He proudly served in the United States Navy. He did nine tours of duty during the Vietnam War, receiving several Medals of Honor.
Allen retired from The U.S. Postal Service after 31 years of dedicated service. He loved fishing, but his greatest love was his grandchildren. Allen was known as “Popcorn Papa” to Eva, Evan, and Eli.
Allen is survived by his children; Jesse Cowles of Georgia, Allen Cowles Jr. of Michigan, Colleen Cowles, and Melissa Cowles (Jerry Ladson) both of Joliet; grandchildren, Alexis, Keyaira, Raven, Allen, Gavin, Cressa, Neveah “Naynay”, Travis, Chloe, and Corey; niece Ann Marie McWatters; and his best friend, Jeff Saunders of Aurora.
He is preceded in death by his dad, George T. Cowles; grandma, Cressa McWatters; grandpa, Frank McWatters; and sister, Alice Cowles.
Visitation for Allen G. Cowles will be held at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.), Joliet, IL, on Thursday, December 28, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until the time of funeral service at 7:00 p.m.
Family and friends are invited to meet on Friday, December 29, 2023, at 9:45 a.m., at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, for interment with full military honors held under the auspices of the United States Navy and the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad.
