Sister M. Martin Hornak, OSF Sister M. Martin Hornak, OSF (1917 - 2012) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois on May 4. She was born in Chicago, Illinois to the late Johanna and Martin Hornak. One of five children, she was preceded in death by her brothers: John and Martin and by her sister, Mary. She is survived by her sister, Johanna Lench, of Pennsylvania and numerous nieces and nephews. Sister Martin was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 77 years. Sister Martin attended Sacred Heart (Slovak) Grade School in Chicago and St. Francis Academy (now Joliet Catholic Academy) in Joliet, Illinois. She earned her Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in Theology from the College of St. Francis (now University of St. Francis) in Joliet. Sister Martin began her teaching ministry in 1937 at St. Mary's in Columbus, Ohio. She ministered at St. John the Baptist, St. Jude and St. Joseph Parish in Joliet. In 1969 she began her ministry as principal and teacher at Assumption Parish in Chicago. She remained there until 1985 when she became Coordinator of Arts and Crafts at St. Pascal's Senior Center. She also taught Religious Education Classes and served as Eucharistic Minister in the Parish. In 1998 Sister Martin returned to Joliet and lived and ministered at Our Lady of Angels. The wake for Sister Martin will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, IL, (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Tuesday, May 8, from 2:00 - 6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, IL on Wednesday, May 9.
