Obituary of Barbarra Jean Dinoffria

Barbara Jean Dinoffria, age 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at the Lightways Hospice Home in Joliet. Barb was born in Joliet on December 26, 1949, to the late Robert Smego and Geraldine Mitchell, and has remained a lifelong resident since. She graduated from Joliet Central. From there, Barb received her Associate’s Degree from Joliet Junior College. She worked as an accountant for many years, first for St. Joseph Hospital then finished her career at the Will County Recorder’s Office.

Barb was a strong, hardworking woman, and a tireless provider. While working two jobs, and looking after her children, she also was primary caregiver to her husband, who was having his own health issues. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, who was very proud of every one of her children and grandchildren and enjoyed being kept up to date on all their accomplishments and activities. When not taking part in her family’s life, Barb loved spending time with her late bulldog, Matchbox, and more recently taking care of her son’s dog Fozzy.

Barb is survived by her children, Renee Cardwell, Dan Cardwell, Matt (Nicole) Fry, and Nick (Alex) Dinoffria; her grandchildren, Brook (Jose) Mendez, Bailey Pubentz, Stephanie (Glen) Cardwell, Danny (Samantha) Cardwell, Madalyn Fry, Scott Fry, Michaela Fry, and David Fry; 8 great-grandchildren; her sister, Carol (Sam) Brandolino; and her brother, Bob Smego.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry “Buzz” Dinoffria; her mother, Geraldine Mitchell; her father, Robert Smego; and her stepmother, Martha Smego.

As it was her wish, cremation rites have been accorded, and private family services have been held. Barb will be laid to rest at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery alongside her late husband. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Barb’s name to Lightways Hospice would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, Joliet.
