Mary Margaret “Peg” Stanfel
(nee Gray)
Mary Margaret “Peg” Stanfel, passed away peacefully at her home on May 2, 2024. Peg was born on March 10, 1930, to the late Elmer and Margaret (nee Baskerville) Gray.
Peg was a lifetime resident of Joliet, IL, graduated from St. Patrick School, St Francis Academy Class of 1948, and continued to enjoy friendships with many of her classmates throughout the years. After raising her five children, Peg worked and retired from Joliet Junior College where she spent many happy years and formed new friendships.
Peg was a devout Catholic and a very social person who rarely turned down an invitation. She loved to be on the go and enjoyed taking excursions, "breaking even" at the Hollywood Casino, shopping, dining, or where ever the car would take her, she would go!.
Peg will be forever missed by her surviving daughters, Patricia, Margie, Kathy; daughter-in-law, Cecilia Scott-Stanfel; granddaughters, Ashley (Mike) Carter, and Elizabeth Stanfel; great-grandsons, Jackson and Brody Carter; her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth “Betty” (Erven) Van Deventer; nieces, Lisa (Zoltan) Mihaly, and Tina Van Deventer; and her special cousin, Sr. Grace Henneberry, who has always been Peg's devoted supporter and friend.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald; and her sons, Donald and David. Peg is also leaving behind special friends and relatives including, Vern Williams (her partner in adventures); cousins, Paul (Margie) Henneberry, John, Tom (Barbara) and Bob (Len Angle) Rowland; and her friends at Woodlawn, Terrace (especially Teresa and Eileen).
The family would like to give special thanks to her home health care providers, especially Rose (who provided loving and constant care and companionship), Lightways Hospice, Dr. Karl Szafranski, and a host of others who provided comfort and care during her last days.
Visitation for Mary Margaret Stanfel will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the Church of St. Jude, 2212 McDonough St., Joliet, IL, from 9:00 a.m. until the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Lightways Hospice or charity of choice.
