Obituary of Alex Rey Mares

Alex Rey “Big Al” Mares, age 31, of Joliet, passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 11, 2024, leaving behind a family who will forever cherish his loving memories.

Born on July 24, 1992, in Joliet, he was the beloved son of John and Camelia “Kim” (Guajardo) Mares. Alex attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School and Providence Catholic High School, graduating from Lockport Township High School with the Class of 2011.

Alex was a man of many passions and hobbies, from fishing and wrestling to playing baseball and football. He was a talented athlete, excelling in sports and showcasing remarkable athletic prowess.

What made “Big Al” truly special was his extraordinary ability to make those around him feel loved and valued. His warm, caring personality was evident in every interaction, whether he was offering a comforting word, a helping hand, or a listening ear. Alex had a heart that overflowed with generosity, always willing to go the extra mile for friends, family, and even strangers.

His humor was another defining trait, a gift that brightened the darkest days. Alex had an uncanny knack for making everyone laugh, often turning ordinary moments into unforgettable memories with his quick wit and playful spirit. His infectious smile and laugh were constants, capable of lifting spirits and bringing joy to any room.

As we remember Alex, we celebrate the incredible person he was and the profound impact he had on our lives. His spirit will forever echo in our hearts, reminding us to live with the same kindness, humor, and love he embodied daily. We will miss you deeply, Alex, but your wings now carry you to a place of peace where your light can shine eternally.

Alex is survived by his loving parents, John and Kim Mares; his siblings, Jennifer (Engelbert) Guajardo-Duran and John (Katie) Mares; his cherished nephews and nieces, Sebastian, Elayna, Gabriel, Madisyn, Elijah, and Olivia; and Best Friend, Anthony Palacios. He also leaves behind his beloved K-9 companions, Abbey and Merrah, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, who will all hold his memory dear.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Willie and Celia Guajardo and Nana May Cepeda; Uncles, Rey and Antonio Guajardo; Aunts, Sarah Rodriguez and Clara Guajardo; and his beloved K-9, Buddy.

The family requests that guests wear casual or their favorite sports attire and come ready to share a funny or favorite memory of Alex. All are welcome.

Visitation for Alex Mares will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, Joliet. Funeral services will take place on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 205 E. Jackson St, Joliet, IL, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
